One of the best ways to improve your writing skills is by reading - but be selective in what you read. Start with the classics, then some of the better known modern writers. See how they manipulate the language, and pull surprising images together to achieve new and exciting resonances in their work. If you are really interested in writing, as well as improving your vocabulary, join a writer's group. There are many excellent groups, and they truly an amazing resource. They gather to critique each other's work. The function of the group is not to say, "Well, I would have written it this way..." or "Put a plot twist in here," but rather to look at what the author has written and say, "This doesn't quite ring true," or "I'm missing something here. Can you fill it in?" so the author has to do all the revising, but the group can reveal both the strengths and weaknesses of the piece. Critiquing is an art in itself, as I'm sure you know many people want to impose their own thoughts and values on a piece of writing. It's one of the problems with teaching writing in school -- teachers too often simply correct errors, which is the function of a proofreader, and don't actually help the students learn how to write. But then, it's easier to correct errors, isn't it?
Hope this helps.

I watch dvd's with subtitle in english, so not only am I reading and learning about certain situations, but also I'm hearing and learning the pronunciation... so you learn english by two senses at the same time: the sense of sight and hearing (kids don't read and they can speak!!).May be I'm kind of lazy to read!!.I also always carry a piece of paper with me and write down the new words or phrases I hear or read to look it up later in the dictionary!!!. Never be afraid of making mistakes when you speak with a native, they understand your first language is an other. Hope it helps!!!

the best way to improve your vocabulary in my opnion is to read. try to read a book a week, or a book a month and highlight any words you dont know, look them up right away, and right them down. i also subscribe to a word of the day listing but the words are not usually words used in everyday language. here is the link: www.wordsmith.org
good luck

Read, put the "new word" on your Yahoo homepage, read the dictionary in your spare time, then each day use a new word when speaking with your friends. Let them know you are expanding your world and should you misuse a word, hopefully they will be kind enough to tell you. You must learn them, use them and soon your vocabulary will grow. Good Luck!! I myself did not take my own advice and am forever sorry.

Find tapes for English as a second language that you can listen to, talk to people who regularly speak English, reference a thesaurus and a dictionary if you are unsure of how to say a certain phrase.

I find it useful to use a thesaurus. If I want to make a sentence more interesting, I look up alternate or seldom used synonyms for key words. Then I try to use them instead of the more common words. Just don't overuse this. You want people to be able to understand you!

Read as much as you can, especially the classics. They will also give you ideas for your stories--it is said that there are only 16 story lines in the world, so find what you can, mix up as many as you like, and apply them to the era and topic you want to write about.

Read books, lots of them. Watch English movies, preferably with subtitles. Watch the news and documentary shows, you can easily learn a lot of new words from such shows. Write when you can. Make sure that you write things correctly. Have someone check them for you. :)
