My monitor flickers and shows vertical bands of colour. The coloured stripes are like a barcode and the width and order of the colours changes every time it flickers. It covers the whole screen and then goes back to normal. I have replaced monitor with identical new one so monitor itself is ok. I have put computer back to factory condition and everything else works ok. I have done full virus/spyware/adware checks and am not infected. Any ideas will be appreciated.

I came here for sensible answers and mostly that is what I got, except from el.tuco, marco from h, and god of god. You three have just displayed how juvenile you are and you are of no worth or use to fellow Yahoo members. Grow up and get a life, and if I catch you sending stupid answers to anyone else I will report you to Yahoo for abuse.

Tried all your suggestions, seems like it is more than likely a video card problem. Off to the pc shop now to get advice and new one. Thanks everyone who helped.

You are right to mention it is not in your monitor.
My guess is it also has nothing to do with your windows/virus/spyware.

I would first like to ask you to check the cable from the computer to the monitor - if you also replaced this cable when you tried the new monitor - well, then it isn't the cable either.
Check if the disturbance comes up when you play with the cable. If so, replace cable or twist it in such a manner that your disturbance is gone.

Only thing left is to check the video card. Video cards can go bad eventually. This problem sounds like an electric issue or a signal timing issue inside the video card.
Try to use a much lower resolution for a while. My guess this will not show the disturbance. But then you'd like to use a normal resolution so you probably need to replace the video card anyway.
Push or wiggle the monitor cable connector on the otside of the pc. Does this show the disturbance? If so, screw the cable in a bit tighter or replace the video card.

So, you would need to try an other video card. Borrow ann old one or just buy a cheap one anywhere. Be aware is should be able to slot in one of the empty slots inside your pc - which is usually no problem at all.
If your pc currently uses a video on the main board, just plug in the new one. The system should automatically switch to the new one. You might be asked to load some drivers but that should not be neccecary.

If your pc currently uses a video card that can be removed, take it out and show it in the computer store to have it replaced with one that goes in the same kind of slot.

Oh, it might be wise not to try your video card in a friends computer - you might just fry that one... :)

Good luck.

The problem is not with your Monitor. It is flickering due to some magnetic wave. May be any other Electronic device is near ur monitor such as Speaker, Radio, Music System, Or such thing. Or else it may be flickering if there are any Electrical wirings or earthing concealed in ur walls near Monitor. Try taking all electrical and electronic devices away from ur Monitor, Ot else try keeping ur PC in other room.

It sounds like a monitor problem, but you swapped with another one and it didn't go away. The other prime suspect is your video card. If you are not comfortable swapping it yourself, see your local computer repairman.

your video card itself could be going, or your monitor could be picking up interfearance. try reducing the colors to 16 colors and see if it still flickers. if it does then i would change the video card. if you cant resolve it, then change the video card anyways to see the result. try a used one first before buying a new one if poosible.

I know this might sound silly, but the problem could be with your mouse cable. If it's being stretch, pulled, or is already damaged you might need to try another mouse and see if it stops flickering.
