In Belgium it is a duty. Not a right ... :-( Not sure what happens if you refuse to vote but you probably get a fine or a jail sentence even. Belgium declined part of the Human Rights Act so is became a duty and no longer is a right to vote.

I think if you spoil your paper your vote goes to the majority (there are always coalitions)

It should only ever be your right, if you do not want to take part in the political process for whatever reason you should not be forced to. I personally never vote as in the u.k when you vote for an M.P you are essentially voting for a party, your M.P then gets "whipped" into voting with their parties interests instead of the interests of the people in his constituency which is how it should be. I refuse to take part in a scheme like this and if it became a duty I would ensure that I voted for the most right wing party available, UKIP probably just because I know they won't ever get in.

Voting is a right but when it comes to well being and enjoy all rights fruitfully and get satisfactory results of wants then it is mandatory to vote ie if you want to be happy then make voting a duty or else suffer by making it as a useless right.

Voting is a right and a duty. If you don't want to vote for any candidate (or question), you should still turn up and spoil your paper (or vote no best answer). Spoiled papers are counted too.

We have (or people in the past) earned the 'right' to vote but I feel that it is every single persons 'duty' to vote. If you don't vote, then shut-up & don't ***** and complain about how things in the country/economy/world.government/local park/police/education/health ...... etc is going.

Voting is perhaps our most important civic duty. The power of the ballot is something we should all take seriously.

A lot of people have died to give you the right to vote. You can't moan if you don't use your vote. Think of the poor people that can't. We are lucky

You have a right to vote, but if you don't vote, you have no right to complain about who gets into power.

both it is our right as citizens in this country to vote and it is our duty to vote or we end up with idiots like tony blair.

It is a right, but if one of the candidates is unacceptable, it is a duty!
