Lots of sub-questions within your question, so I apologize if I miss something. In my personal opinion, I believe that there are still many people within our world who are good at heart, have the ability to do things with good intentions and want to see things change for the better. The question is, what will motivate them? You see, the world has become so very calloused because of those who simply DO NOT CARE. These people have been nasty, ignorant and ill mannered to the rest of us that we have put up "The Berlin Wall" all around us so that we don't get hurt anymore.
As to the media, they are a very large part of the problem. Turn on the television, what do you see, it's all about negativity - afterall, that's what sells. People are content to remember the negative, but never even mention the positive. So my advice to anyone who reads this is: Find something nice to say about someone other than yourself or a family member, and say it to more than one person. If you get good customer service, make it a point to mention it to the manager. It only takes a second and helps to encourage that person to continue to do the things that made you take notice of them and lets the facility know that they have done something right in hiring that individual and should look for more with the same qualities.
Finally, as to can a number of us set a good example? Without a doubt. When you do something good and many will ask why did you do that, or what can I do to repay you? Simply reply please just do something nice for someone else, that is the only repayment that I would ever require. In doing this, you help to give them back hope that there really is still good in the world.
*** Remember Mother Teresa? Her impact was the most profound to date... Here's a quote from her that I read every day:
People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered... Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives... Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and true enemies... Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you... Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight... Build anyway.
If you find serentiy and happiness, they may be jealous... Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow... Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough... Give the world the best you have anyway.
You see, in the end, it is between you and GOD... It was never between you and them anyway.

The answer is no. Not because America is such a bad place, but because of the nature of people. All people. One cannot see everything everywhere. Several people have mentioned the power of the individual in making a difference. True, the individual will make a difference, but even Gandhi and Mother Teresa were never "aware" of all of the effects of their action. Ones perception of problems and attitudes will never be the same as others and will never be "true".
Just look the the term "Politically Correct". It has no basis in reality, and yet people are striving to act in this manner. This is the most insulting and short cited way to act. Truth is an absolute and unless one knows the truth about what is going on around them, one cannot make the long road to Awaken.
So the answer is No, not the way one might expect it to.

One person can definitely make a difference, and often has, historically. Mahatma Gandhi is a good example... and his quote is appropriate. "Be the change you want to see in the world."
There are great imbalances in the world, overpopulation, the spread of disease, rampant warfare and oppression. And in the West, perhaps particularly in America, many people are not as affected by all that, at least not personally. That's not to say that people are not aware or are not doing anything. Buffet's recent contribution to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is amazing, and the greatest philanthropic contribution in history... and the foundation helps people worldwide. Has he made a difference? I think he has.
For those of us who do not have billions to give away, we can give away our time, we can be passionate about what we do, and we can help others whenever and wherever we can. Everything counts, perhaps more than we know. We can be the ripple that starts a tidal wave. But all change has to start as an inside job. :)

The bigger question is: will the world wake up. The USA is an oasis of civilization in a pretty nasty world, so we are protected from many harsh realities. But knowing that this is true should motivate us to educate ourselves and help to spread truth. First, people have to care about the truth (few do -- they just believe the news media) and be willing to think (most don't have that habit) and stop the hate talk -- no knowledge is gained that way. Realize that wishful
thinking doesn't help -- terrorists will go away if we just ignore them is not a real strategy.

I do believe that the leader of USA has already made an unrecoverable actions throughout the entire planet . If no one stands up to stop him from doing any more damage to his own country and every other , world war 3 or is it 4 , is already at our door. I think that people are still sleeping and how the days goes by, the sleep is deeper and deeper. I hope for the sake of all righteous , reasonable and worthy people in USA and world wide that things will change for the better. Only if they would realize the danger !
Good luck to u all !

The problem with us as the citizens if the USA is that we have not formulated the moral code that is the American ideal. What we have done is come to America to improve the conditions of our own ethnicities and races. We refuse to come together to formulate an ideal that would be in the best interest of everyone. So, we oppress and enslave each other and then we ask why do the rest of the world hates us when we have not begun to love each other.
We have allowed human difference and human competition to somehow, develop itself into an American ideal. This is the belief that because I possess more than you I am therefore, better. It is only in a time of war that look past our differences and ban together in the unity of "One nation under God, indivisible" and "All men are created equal." After the war is over we return back to our superiority through ethnicity and race. Most of us in this country migrated here from the tyranny of Kings and Queens, but it is the enourmous lifestyles of the Kings and Queens that we all seek to acquire.
We should hold our heads down in shame when we look at the tyranny, starvation and destruction of any other nation, because someone in this country parents or grandparents were once a member of that nation. We can not have the same goals as any other nation because we are made up of all nations. It is this diversity that should be at the foundation of our appreciation and love for humanity. Unfortunately, we have not exemplified the courage to express this as of yet.
The easiest person to blame for the ills of our great nation would be George W. Bush. The truth is most of us voted for him to exemplify the American ideal. So, when he goes into another country and we take from them, this is no different than what we do with our enourmous interest rates, enourmous gas prices and our enourmous higher education cost. It is not the president who is at fault for doing what we as American's do, it is the citizens of this country that have not yet embraced the true ideal of this nation. The president does not make me sell drugs, abuse my mate, disrespect my elders or take more than I will ever need. As citizens this is what we do to ourselves. It is us the citizens that must make the change and embrace not just our races and ethnicities, but our fellow citizens as well. When it comes to fighting wars and sacrificing our lives all we require is that you are an American, this should be the same requirement when it is time for love.

I FEEL , YOU ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER BUT I'LL GIVE MY OPINION. GEORGE W. BUSH IS WITHOUT QUESTION, THE MOST EVIL MAN ON THE PLANET AND THE LINEAGE HE WAS BORN INTO HAS SHED MUCH EVIL INTO HISTORY. YOUR QUESTION , ACTUALLY OPENED MY EYE'S TO A DISTANT POSSIBILITY. THAT BEING THAT THIS EVIL ( AND YES IGNORANT S.O.B. ) MIGHT ACTUALLY DO SOME GOOD IN THIS WORLD ,ALTHOUGH BY ACCIDENT. MAYBE...JUST MAYBE , HE HAS INADVERTENTLY SHOWN THE WORLD THAT POLITICAL CORRUPTNESS IS A DANGEROUS ACCESSORY TO LIFE. THAT WE HAVE GIVEN THESE , SO CALLED HONORABLE MEN , ENTIRELY TOO MUCH POWER. TO BLINDLY TRUST THE WELFARE OF OUR CHILDREN AND THEIR CHILDREN ALIKE, IS FOOLISH ON OUR PART. THE INFANTILE BELIEF THAT THOSE IN POWER ARE SOMEHOW " BETTER " THAN THE REST OF SOCIETY. THE RECKONING THAT THEIR MONEY AND THE PEOPLE THEY KNEW , ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR TERM IN OFFICE AND THAT OUR VOTES WERE IRRELEVANT. A JUVENILE BELIEF THAT THE WISHES OF THE PEOPLE WERE THE BACKBONE OF OUR SOCIETAL STRENGTH. AN HONORABLE STANCE THAT "WE...AMERICANS " ARE BETTER THAN TO DO THE THINGS THAT THE LEADERS OF 3RD WORLD COUNTRIES SO OFTEN DO AS NORMAL PROCEDURES. THAT OUR FANTASY OF BEING THE "BEST" AND WOULD NEVER SMEAR THE GREAT NAME OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , MIGHT NOT BE A REALITY AS WE HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT. THAT MAYBE...THEY WERE RIGHT WHEN THEY CALLED US "THE UGLY AMERICANS ? NAH, THIRD ANNUAL PIPE DREAM.

The best people, the ones who changed the world, didn't wake up one morning and say, "I want to make a difference" they just did what they thought was right. We're born, we live, and we die. It's what we do within that time that will define us. Try the butterfly effect. If I change his life, he will change hers, and she will change another. On and on..... Don't try to be a hero. Just focus on being a good and decent person and you will change the world.
