The best I know of is 'Inquiry into Life' by Sylvia Mader published by WCB/McGraw-Hill (ISBN 0-697-25181-0)

Holt publishing company has a book called, oddly enough, Biology.
I find it clearly written. It has great diagrams.
This is a high school level book.

you can try campbell or johnson, but they are very introductory . then you can upgrade to alberts et al that is a very good book
