Each of the Hawaiian islands were at one time undersea marine mountains built up by volcanic eruptions at a hot spot in the earth's crust. When each broke surface it became an island. At this time a new marine mountain is growing south of the existing islands. They are called marine mountains because they are related to the sea.

The term "marine mountain" as far as I can recall is generic to any mountain under the seas. There are many causes for structures under the sea. Mid -Ocean Ridges are long mountain chains formed at divergent boundaries(where two plates meet).
Where as volcanic islands before they are above the seas are called seamounts. So there are many structures that could be called "marine mountains" however in oceanography they have more define terms.
