I certainly enjoy anything by James Patterson. He has a couple series books and some stand alones. One of his best stand alones is The Jester. It is set during the Crusades, a small town is infiltrated and a man's wife is taken captive. The man then poses as a jester to get his wife back. Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas is also a wonderful--it's not a trashy romance novel--it is so pure and romantic but it's also a tearjerker.
If your looking for something to rekindle a passion for reading and a passion for life choose The Purpose Driven Life. Very motivational and very inspiring.
Try some children's lit as well--The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, The Tale of Desperaux, and Because of Winn Dixie. All of these are wonderful, fantastically well written books.
As always, you can never judge a book by its cover. Pick something that appeals to you--seek out reviews on the book. Most of all read the first page, the last paragraph, what have you, and be thankful that you can read. Whatever I'm reading, a boring text, a suspenseful novel or the Sunday paper, I feel truly blessed that I can read the words on the page and this always keeps my passion for reading burning.

All the Harry Potter series or the Lemony Snicket Series if a child who is a teenager or preteen who is interest in reading such material.
As for children who are as young as 2 1/2 and 6 years of age something funny and not to heavy in words like the Robert Munich book Paper Bag Princess. As books based on TV shows like Dora the Explore or Sesame Street.
As for children between the ages of 7 and 10 that's a good question I would ask them what types of books their friends are reading. At one time books by Judy Bloom were popular. In the nineties the Baby sitter club books were popular. The children of this age group if they are interested in reading will tell you what they would like to read.

I don't think I could recommend a specific book, but I would recommend to examine your approach to reading. Reading is something you have to make time for and spend time doing. You can't just read one chapter or five pages and put it down till tomorrow because you'll never pick it up again. Read in big chunks; get far enough into the book at the start so you start to care about what is going on, so you WANT to find out "what next". Also make sure you read someplace that is comfortable, cheerful, with few distractions--someplace you'll want to return to and fall into that other world again.

Patricia Cornwell did it for me. Her books have intelligent research done for each and although the subject matter sounds offputting it really isn't too gruesome. They have various different threads running through them making you want to read each subsequent book. Just start with the first one and see what I mean. Read them in their proper sequence, as follows:
Postmortem
Body of Evidence
All That Remains
Cruel and Unusual
The Body Farm
From Potters Field
Cause of Death
Unnatural Exposure
Point of Origin
Black Notice
The Last Precinct
Blow Fly
Trace

To kill a mockingbird
It is written in a very simple english but has a gripping story and style. I like books like these, the ones that draw you into them instead of you having to wade through them.
Other examples would be:
The Alchemist
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's stone (The first book)

Depends on What Genre you like. I always enjoy Anne Rice. She has vampire and ghost stories. Also "the Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold. It is about a young woman who is murdered, and it tells the book from her perspective as she watches from Heaven while the events unfold.
