Well, certainly if you decided to pull out your own sutures, more than likely it's against medical advice. However, you are free to do so. If you will do it, try to find a friend or somebody else to help you pull them out. The last thing you want to do is cut the sutures too short on both ends, and then you don't have a lose end with which to grab in order to pull it out. And that would not be good, because you would for sure have to go back to your dentist. Use a pair of tweezers and a very small, but pointed pair of scissors. A pointed instrument, like a toothpick or a dental pick could be helpful to pull up on the suture and thus making it easier to grab with the tweezers. Grab the knot, pull up, cut on one side of it or the other, and then pull it right out. Keep in mind, there are different suturing methods, so there may be just one long suture, or many knots and thus many sutures. As far as infection, I would not worry too much about it, I suspect the risk is small. First of all, it did not become infected after the procedure. Secondly, your mouth and the tissues in your mouth are pretty adept at fighting off pathogenic invaders. If this were not the case, then everybody would be getting infections all of the time. If this is a worry, then take a swig of mouthwash to rinse your mouth before and after. Oh yeah, make sure the sutures are ready to come out. I'm guessing your dentist placed them there to approximate cut tissues, so the last thing you want to do is pull the sutures out only to have the wound open again. But if it feels like it's healed to you, pull them out. You can always pull just one of them out, wait a day or two, and then pull another out. If you know how many sutures you have, then make sure this is ultimately the number you eventually pull out. Of course, under ideal circumstances, your dentist should do it, but, like you said, it's quite a journey to get to him, and, the risk is quite small of anything crazy happening. But it is your risk, and you are doing so at your own risk. Hope this helps!

I did, for the same reason. It's really quite painless. I used needlenose pliers (sterilized) for the couple I couldn't get a hold of with my fingers. I had called my dentist to be sure before I did it, and he said go ahead.

IF you can do so without tearing the wound open or injuring yourself I would attempt it.

I've taken my own stitches out before with no ill results.

Be sure to WASH your hands.

NO... Don't do it, you could give yourself an infection. Just suffer the drive.
