For 2 computers to communicate they must have a 'handshake". Peer2Peer (P2P), generally use a cable, and networks use cables too for communication. In the P2P communication they 'establish rules of how to talk' from one to the other. These are simple rules, long ago established. With the Network Server communication the Administrator establishes the rules. These known in the trade as security parameters...like what type of password if any is needed to communicate from one computer to another and the complexity of that password... when it will expire...use of mixed case letters, numbers, and symbols.... Because the server is actually a computer just sitting there most to the time it can be set to establish many more 'rules' (protocal) of how to handshake between computers as well as monitor the communications.

Server Based networks provide information integrity.

You can backup files from a server much easier than you can from 1000 computers.

You can set security policies at the server and have them applied to 1000 computers

The Server can be a central acces point, Screening all information

If you go all the way, you can run computers entirely from locked bootable images on a server. None of the remote machines will need antivirus software....anti spyware... they are probably arleady behind a firewall.. the users can pick their operating system every boot...

So many advantages.

There are BIG dissavantages too, but I will leave them for another post.

Your question is not clear because you are mixing some different concepts. I think the question that you are trying to ask the "Windowscentric" concept of a File Server vs Peer-to-Peer File sharing and the differenced is securing fille access and privileges.

Is this what you want?
