It depends how hot the sun is. A little exposure - say 10-15 mins - to sunlight that isn't fierce is good because sunlight encourages the production of Vitamin D (preventing a number of diseases) but too much exposure is bad and increases the risk of skin cancer later in life.
No child should be exposed to the sun without sunblock. For a baby, I would use the highest factor possible - one formulated for babies - and reapply it regularly. In addition, you should ensure that your baby wears a sunhat and its skin is covered with light cotton clothing. Give your baby water to drink on a regular basis. And do not expose your baby to the sun at the hottest part of the day - which is between noon and 4pm.

Always make sure your baby is regularly sun-creamed with a high spf like 50. Have your baby to wear sunhat, sunglasses and cover arms and legs approiately. The baby should not really sit in direct sunlight, so invest in a sun shade for when taking it on trips to beach etc. even a sun canopy for the babies buggy/seat.

hi i used to be a nurse and we were discussing this topic with one of the doctors one day. She suggested that whilst its bad to expose a baby to the sun in one way, in another way its also good for them as the sun encourages the prodution of vitamin D which is essential for strong bones amonst other things. So our doc suggested that you expose a baby for around 10 mins of weak sunlight (before 11am and after 3.30pm) and then put on the suncream. I hope this helps.

hi never expose your baby to the sun they can get severe burns but if you need to go out then dress your baby in loose clothing so he/she doesnt get to hot and put a high factor sun cream on the exposed parts arms/cheeks/legs/feet/and put a sun hat on. a baby with sunstroke is not very nice

NEVER put your baby in the sun - their skins are 30% thinner than ours and burn very easily. If you're out and about with your baby, use a very high factor suncream, cover them as much as possible (sunshade, hat etc) and don't expose them for long. It can lead to cancer in the long term and very bad sunburn in the short term!

Not direct sunlight without suncream. Big pet hate of mine to see babies/toddlers under parasols with tiny litttle bare feet sticking out into the sun. Once out of the Earths atmosphere NO-ONE should expose themselves -it'll kill ya man. Not big , not clever.

Yes, everyone needs sunlight. But a baby, you have to use common sense. You need sunscreen of course and I don't mean laying them outside to get a tan.
You need to talk to your pediatrician. The fact that you would ask the question means you need specific guidelines and docs are great about answering health questions.
Don't get me wrong. If you don't know then it's great you asked.
Babies are at our mercy. I'm glad you are concerned enough to ask. Call your baby's doc and ask to talk to the nurse. The nurse will be happy to answer your question
Good luck

If you find out can you please tell the idiots that take young babies to hot countries in the summer just because they don't have to pay for flights for them. Like Cyprus in July.
