and how can we correct this dilemma?
What can I do to not automatically look down on them as having a serious shortcoming?

They use such horrible grammar and spelling because they are either uneducated or lazy.

I have no idea how we can correct the dilemma, since the modern environment (text messaging, etc.) does not value the written word, and a lot of the celebrities that are held up as role models for the younger generation are absolutely abhorrent slaughterers of the language.

I definitely look down on people who lack the ability to communicate effectively too. I can generally forgive poor writing if I can speak to the person and find that they are able to communicate intelligently vocally, but just not put their words on paper well. That's just poor education. Some may call me a snob, and if that's the case, then maybe I am a snob. However, I'd rather sound like a snob, than sound lazy and ignorant.

Laziness is the largest problem with people using poor grammar and incorrect punctuation. Spell check will not find many typos or incorrect spellings.

One of the worst errors is using the word "which" rather than the word "that." Those words following "which" are not important. Another error I see regularly on these boards and elsewhere is using the word "that" for a person rather than the word "who". Those are two of my gripes for today.

Just call me the Grammar goddess

I can sympathise with them. I always try to use correct spelling and grammer, but a few months ago I started texting like a maniac with this guy I met, and everything changed! You have that constant challenge to try to get everything you want to say into as few texts as possible to keep the cost down, and you start abbreviating words and missing out essential grammer, even spaces! I began to find myself writing things like 'u' and 'lol' and 'wot' in everyday situations - that was when I realised I needed to stop texting so much!

I suppose it's the outcome of modern education (or the lack of), and laziness. They can't use 'check spelling' because they either can't read or can't pick the right word 'check spelling' offers.

l think its not about them not being able to write correctly but its all about trying to make short cuts which sometimes go terribly wrong. As follows { l am flain' in loev wiht htis girl from my hod} You get my drift.......
