Men and women sometimes act so different from one another, that it seems like they are from different planets.
The planet Mars (named after the Roman god of War) has traditionally been used to represent men, and the planet Venus (named after the Roman goddess of Love) has been used to represent women.

Venus and Mars are the two planets on either side of Earth (from the inside out, it's Venus / Earth / Mars). The idea is that women started out on one planet, men started out on the other, and now we've met on the middle planet (Earth) and have to figure out how to interact with this "alien species".
(I truly believe that any mythological connections are proverbial gravy, and that the book would have been called "Men are from Jupiter, Women are from Pluto" if that's what we'd happened to name our two closest planetary neighbors. The planets were named well before we had any capability for space travel, or to figure out just which planet was where.)

Lots of different reasons.
A saying goes something like this.. "Women.. they're from another world" or "They're alien to me"..
Venus is the 2nd planet from the sun, then earth, then Mars.
Venus is hot and Mars is cold and distant
All these things are metaphors for recognizing the significant and un-explained differences between two human genders.
***
PS. of course this concept doesn't play well with the 1960's feminist group who would like to promote the idea that we're basically the same, any differences are societal based, and no accommodations should be made in recognizing gender differences.

The basic assumption was men were fighters and women were gracious and beautiful.
According to mythology, Planet Mars was the commander for wars and Planet Venus was the Goddess of Beauty..
Hence the saying

Astrological signs for men and women. Mars the planet of war Venus the planet of love. The book was jibberish however.

The book by that name was probably called that because Mars was the Roman god of war, and Venus was the Roman god of Love. They may have thought men are more aggressive, and women more loving and understanding (at least I think so--I never read the book).

It is an antiquated notion that men and women are so different that we come from different planets. As in woman are all lovey, dovey, gushy from Venus and men are from an angry, red and empty planet. Just another attempt to divide our genders even further. Hence, the men-bashing from some women and the objectifying from some men. It all sucks. Everyone is unique. Period.
