I spent several years working as a cashier when I was just out of high school. I saw a great deal of abuse of these handouts. Women with food stamps would come in with their kids, give each kid a $1.00 food stamp, and let the kid buy one .50 cent candy bar or .25 cent bag of chips. She would do this until she had enough change left over to buy her Newports or her beer. I'd see women come in with WIC checks and cash three or four of them at a time-sometimes getting as much as five gallons of milk. Then she would-in plain view-pass out milk to her friends. I think that since food stamps now come in the form of debt cards, the change issue has been resolved.
Stop me if you have heard this before, but when my hubby and I were first married, I was buying our groceries for the week-meager supplies to be sure, and I was behind two women in the check out of the grocery store who were buying ten live Maine lobsters with food stamps. Then you watch these people load their groceries into the back of Cadillacs or BMWs and you wonder...
So in answer to your question, I think there is alot of abuse. But I also think there truly are a great many families who couldn't make it without help. Wish there was some way to weed out the leeches.

Some people abuse and some do not. Their are actually people who really need this kind of help. This is not the kind of help, that a person will get "Rich" on. The people that "abuse" this privilege, make it hard, for the ones that do not.
As far as getting SSI--a person has to go to several Medical Doctors, that the Social Security Administration sets them up with.,and sometimes a psychologist. Also, foodstamps are usually for the Mothers with Children. It's based on income. A lot of people have to use this system, to get themselves on their feet. People, have different circumstances, so every case is different. I know people, who have started a Business, and are Buying a House. The business is slow, so they have to get Food Stamps, temporarily. No one knows what kind of help, they may need. Look at Katrina. Don't forget, how much Money the "Government" throws away on "Parties," that they throw in Washington.
Yes, their are some Abusers--and some that Do Not, Abuse these Privileges
deanryandavis:) There are as many of "one color
as another," when it comes
down to this.

Yes, there are abuses in every federal program, look at the money that the federal government gives the big oil company's to explore for oil and alternative energy. Just an example, I think that the rules ought to be stricter but there are people that do need the TEMPORARY help and Clinton's plan of welfare to work has improved this. In Michigan you can only be on welfare for two years in a row and four years lifetime total, I think this is a strong step forward but some other things need to be changed.

I think some people do not abuse them, but (especially regarding welfare & food stamps) many people do. However, it's no wonder the systems are being abused. They are unconstitutional to begin with. The Federal Government & State governments are not our nannies! Communities, charitable organizations, churches, and families should be the ones helping those who need food, assistance, etc.

i worked at wal mart for a short period of time to catch up on some bills. During that period of time i realized how absolutely retarded the welfare system is. People would come in with their cellular phones, leather jackets, and designer jeans, but sure enough there it was... the food stamp card. Now if this wasn't bad enough, these people were always fat. They obviously weren't starving. And there is no limitation of what kinds of food could be bought either. Oh the junk food that came through, the candy bars, the potato chip, and definitely the mountain dew... gotta have that. And then there is WIC (women infants and children) Now i would have to say WIC is better than food stamp because of the limitations of food, but at the same time find the whole program repulsive. One of my co-workers is on WIC. He has a 64" plasma screen television, new computer, and just recently purchased a $300 grill. Also, is constantly going out for lunch on his lunch breaks. Now obviously people need lunch, but but if you are so broke that you need help from WIC in order to feed your child, then i think you need to be eating bologna and ramen noodles, not Applebees and Olive Garden So yeah, i definately think welfare is widely abused and just a strain on society. Just my opinion though

Many things in our life are abused. And yes, I do agree that there are far too many that receive these benefits and are manipulative people or just too plain smart for the good of others, plainly they benefit themselves and not the whole of society; there are people that deserve, want or need these benefits and the guidelines are so astringent that they are unable to receive them while others appear to easily obtain them. As far as lazy it seems to me that it takes a lot of work to "mess with the government" so are these people lazy or just "too smart"? All in all, my answer is YES.

Some do, but a majority don't. It's hard to find work when you have small children at home and no daddy. This is not leave it to beaver anymore. single mom's need help because child support is doing NOTHING to help collect payments. We are supposed to help feed the poor, clothe the poor and make sure they have a place to sleep. What would happen to all the children? How do you expect a child to worry about adult things, like what are we eating today, are we eating today?

It's abused I stopped one early morning and these guys young and able bodied like me paid with a EBT card. Turns out they were on their way to a job and they got paid under the table for it. That way the employer paid no benefits they had medical coverage and a living wage while qualifying for assistance.

i heard its pretty tough getting on ssi, but as for other forms of welfare its a lot easier.
i truly belive there are people out there that abuse those programs. for the people who really need it, its a wonderful program, but people who get it just to get a free ride through life are idiots. selfish, and greedy. i hope they all get caught.
