Listen to yourself - "parents ask their childs permission". Parents don't have to ask their childs permission for anything, especially major decisions like divorcing the person that they once loved. It is a very emotional decision and it can't be made by a child. It has to be made by the husband and the wife. Sorry kid, but you don't have enough life experience to have an opinion about what's right for adults.

Children are not privy to all the information that leads up to a divorce, nor mature enough to really be able to make such a decision. Nor are they to be in the position to dictate something like that to their parents. It wouldn't be good for the child, or the parents to allow such things to be decided by their children.

That's not to say that the child should not be considered. My goodness, if a divorce is going to happen, making it as gentle as possible on the children should be BOTH parents primary objective. If they make it harder on their kids, then shame on them for not following rule number one of parenting, take care of your child before yourself.

sometimes the best thing for the kids can be a divorce. If the parents are continually fighting, disrespectful, angry... Just trust that they are doing the right thing. Don't allow yourself to get in the middle.

Opinion? It's not going to matter anyway,
Permission? You are kidding, right? Since when has anyone had to ask their kid's permission or a divorce?

Arlene is wise. Kids almost always want things to remain the way they are because their knowledge of life is limited; and you don't want them to feel like they have the burden of deciding if the family should break up, or that it's somehow their "fault" that it does. On the other hand, they should be considered and consulted because it affects them greatly.

If they decide to get divorced that's up to them and not the child. Let me assure you that if they WANT to get divorced, as bad as it seems, it's better for the child than for them to stay together when they don't want to.

they should be condiderate and ask how the kids feel, but if they want a divorce, sometimes it is better for the kids not to be around people who dont want to be together...
either situation is hurtful and sometimes traumatising for children.
