The chinese shamelessly pick up western designs of anything from pens to trains to cars and planes and copy it right down to the last screw. The quality is pathetic, the finishing is bad and yet we say the Chinese are the most effecient manufacturers in the world - is it right to say that ?

This is probably the worst thing about China - they totally disregard our patents for things, like you're discussing.

I read somewhere (I think Reader's Digest) that Ford or Chevy released a small truck over in China that sold pretty well. Its sales nosedived 6 months later when a Chinese company released an EXACT DUPLICATE of the truck for far less in cost (probably because of shoddy manufacturing). They are so similar, you can exchange doors of the American and Chinese trucks, and they will fit and function properly in either vehicle!

Why are Chinese companies allowed to totally disregard the patents of American companies? Can't the U.S. government do something about it?

There are some products made by chinese which were really commercial in nature, it means, once it got defect, you have to throw it away and buy a new one. Other products, like military hardware, they are one of the best nowadays. I beleive that before copying a particular designs, especially those protected under the copyright law, they first obtained a permission from the ligitimate originator. Otherwise, they will manufacture it, but marketed only for domestic use, not for export. Quality wise, I don't agree that they are the most efficient manufacturers in the world.

You are right. The Chinese do copy products around the world. Don't forget, the Japanese and Taiwanese used to do that too. It's not only Asians, other people/manufacturers as well. You may have copyright or patent on your design, but there will always be other people trying to copy and modify the shape, structure, colors, features, improve it and produce it at a economical cost. This is a common business practice.

Doing business with China will be our demise. They are getting rich by producing the goods that are sold in the USA. They are also getting rich by copying whatever they think will sell in China and other parts of the world. We are very stupid allowing the Chinese to participate in our finances and trade. Some day it will destroy us. All for American love of the dollar.

100% RIGHT. Ask Samsonite, Honda, Volkswagen and a thousand other multi national companies in China. If it makes money for China why not. Best country in the world for manufacturing.

It's IRONIC, isn't it? I mean, the Communists of the People's Republic of China are aping the very worst characteristics of unfettered Capitalism (i.e., unregulated, and potentially unfair, business practices, such as what was done by the so-called "Robber Barons" of the 1800s) in order to unfairly maximize their profits.

It's too bad that we in the USA are keeping our prices down by buying goods and services from them, because that's only rewarding their unethical business practices (I'm referring specifically to pirating copyrighted materials and stealing "intellectual property" more than I'm referring to their manufacture of cheap, shoddy versions of products).
