Contact your home owner's insurance agent. He/she should have the name or two for you to contact to get an appraisal. If your agent DOESN'T have a contact name, contact a different insurance company and talk to them as if you were shopping for new insurance so you can ask questions--"oh..and I have these paintings..."

If you have the receipt for the paintings--how much you paid--that's another thing that may add to the value.

If the artist is well known (so anyone could google them and find out about their work) that's another way to determine value. The artist might even have their own web site where they sell their work.

Contact the nearest big city art museum for a list of appraisers they might have

If the painting turn out to be worth a king's ransom, have them wired for security--that is if your house is already wired....\

If the painting are not worth that king's ransom, in case of fire, grab the family photos first--THEN the painting.

All the best!

I would start at your local museum or some antique shops. If they don't know they might point you in the right direction.
