It's a prepared play i.e when the ball is kicked(corner, freekick) each player has a planned run they should make,
such as Mikey Owen running near post, gerrard running far post, lampard hanging on edge of box and crouch hit the penalty spot
and Beckham hitting crouch, Like a planned battle attack with and all players knowing there job.

The term set piece or set play is used in football to refer to a situation when the ball is returned to open play following a stoppage, particularly in a forward area of the pitch. Most often, the term is used to refer to free kicks and corners, but sometimes throw-ins. Many goals result from such positions, whether scored directly or indirectly. Thus defending set pieces is an important skill for defenders, and attacking players spend much time practising them; set pieces are one area where tactics and routines can be worked out in training in advance of matches. Some players (such as David Beckham) specialise in the delivery of set pieces

A 'set piece' usually occurs after a foul or on a corner kick. The team that gets to restart play usually has time to "set up" a particular play to take advantage of where they are on the field.
On a corner kick you will usually see taller players in the penalty area trying to knock the ball in with their head once it enters the area after being struck.
After a foul near the penalty area, the referee is usually backing the "wall" of players ten yards away from where the foul occured. This gives the attacking team a chance to talk about, or set up, the restart.
In both cases there is a great advantage to the attacking team in terms of being able to score off this set piece.
Hope this helps.

A set piece refers to a situation in football when the play stops (dead ball) At this point the players have a chance to "set" themslves ready for the start of the game. Such a situation would be a free kick or corner.

A free kick or corner, (practised in training!)

A Dead ball situation, the chance to arrange the players into a set position for a pre-worked out play.

Ie not 'Open Play' the ball starts from the 'Dead' position of
a free kick etc.
O.k?

a set peice is anything like a throw in, corner kick, goal kick, ect. basically anything that causes the play to stop(like the ball being kicked out of bounds)and restarted(like the throw in that follows is the set peice).
