An ad hoc network is a wireless connection between two or more computers with no server, router, etc, involved. Each computer simply announces its presence, and then accepts packets from any other wireless computers it discovers. It is usually used to set up a temporary connection between two machines when not around a "real" network. Because there is no server or gateway included, an ad hoc network does not give access to the Internet, etc. Only to the local computers connected.
