College gives you opportunities that those without college connections do not have.
Bill Gates did not finish college, but it could have had an impression upon him that allowed him to be as successful as he had been. His father went to college and was an attorney, so it had a bearing on his fate.
Without a degree, some doors will remain forever closed to those individuals without one.
Friendships, networks, and marriage prospects are not available to you because you had not those experiences college students receive from getting educated. Professors, and classmates play an important part of life's experiences. I work in a hotel and have asked couples where they met...many reply ...we met in college.
There are mathematical formulas that tell how much money you will be able to earn by the more education you have.
I believe college teaches you some of the theories behind greatness, and gives you the tools and opportunities to become successful and being able to influence mankind.
Politics, artists, musicians, scientists, mathematics, economics, doctors, researchers, lawyers, professors, psychologists, all these require degrees of higher education beyond high school.
Without a degree those careers are impossible.

Not necessarily, that's based on my personal experience.
Most of those who go to college are processed according to a motto that goes like: learn, think, grow and develop. While the high school drop-outs that you have mentioned are non-conformists to institutional way of learning. they simply did the natural thing which is: think, learn, develop. Thinking comes first, in my opinion, not learning, that's when and where great people come to earth, even if they happened to be in college or on the street.

I would say that any career you NEED education for should be learned at a university. Really only skills are taught at college. All those people you mentioned are highly motivated and have a lot of street smarts.

that's a complex question. i hear stories all the time about people who never went to college making more money than people who did. college isn't for everyone. it's about opportunity
