Begin by watching a lot of films, and dont restrict yourself to Hollywood movies. Then study history of cinema, there are a lot of resources on the net.
Read as many reviews as possible, Maybe even star to write them. Learn how to deal with actors. Learn about screenwriting, storyboarding, framing and compositions, lighting, editing, montage, etc.
And most importantly start looking at the world through the eyes of a director. Expand your creativity and approach subjects from new and unique perspectives.

i think that you should try to take films if ever your school has that kind of course or try enrolling in summer workshop coz here in the philippines we have summerworkshops on how to make films or direct short stories and other stuffs and also some universities offer courses related to film. just be patient and experiment with your ideas and right them down so you won't forget and you should really have a good imagination so that when you direct a film your audience can really feel it. hhhmmm... follow your passion and no matter how high your ambitions are, who cares, right? goodluck and hope to see your own movie

Hey! the best way is make your own movies that are really different and are really interesting.then send them to a producer OR take a job under a director for helping him out because you have to make a first step in the ladder. if you have talent and willpower, go for your dream, you can do it!

Alot of people will hate me for saying this but...MySpace is one of the single most effective networking tools out there. It actually helped me launch my career in independent horror film. Because of MySpace, I now am co-owner of an independent horror company writing reviews, and now a director contacted myself and my partner and now we are co-writing a script and producing his film as well as starring in it. Plus I've gotten MANY connections.
