7 - Most significant of all the numbers, seven is generally thought of as lucky because there have been so many famous groups of seven or of its multiples: the days of the week, phases of the Moon, notes of the musical scale, colors of the spectrum, the seven original fixed stars, the seven graces, the seven virtues and, from the Bible, seven days of creation, even trumpets, seven plagues, seven seas and many more. Its great mysticism is summed up in the belief that a seventh son will possess enormous magical powers. So the number is regarded as highly spiritual and philosophical. Its people are intuitive, perhaps psychic, and not interested in material wealth. If you are a seven person, you have great associations with water, your planet being Neptune, so you will tend to love travel, especially on the sea. You often have power over others, but must avoid being too introverted Your originality can make you a good writer, poet or painter. The 7th, 16th and 25th are your lucky days, together with any monday. Your best color is green and your stone is moss-agate. The associated tarot card is the Chariot

First, I guess it's because number 7 is mostly associated with magic or psicic stuff or something. I read an article about this magic history that 7 is some kinda historical and it means something to magic world--i dont really remember.
Second, i guess, this is according to a general conclussion of daily life experience with number 7. There has been a rumor that many people who set things up with number 7, got lucky in their lives. For example, a student with student number like 7, 77, 17, etc got the highest score. A man have a 7-letter store name got a lot of buyers. etc etc. And there has alson been some stupid research about finding out whether number 7 is really a lucky number or what.
I dont remember the detail but this is what i remember:
-According to some research, from a bunch of sample of reasearch, more than 65% people with "7"characteristic are succesful persons. (7-letter name) (birth date consisting 7) etc etc. So people conclude that 7 IS a lucky number.
-And there's also some research that said that every lottery winners/stuff had a close relationship with number 7. For example, majority of the lottery winners have number 7 in their lottery numbers--more than any winning numbers.
So, people start to think that 7 is a lucky number. They jump to a conclussion--which I think doesnt make any sense--that number 7 is a lucky number.
It's just a general conlussion. It's nothing more than "number possibility theories" "numerical possibilities" etc etc. I guess it's just coincidence--although i dont believe in coincidences.

The number 7 is considered holy by many cultures and religions. A lot of important things come in 7's : the seven wonders, the seven Muses etc. It is a very convenient prime number like 3.
It is considered luck however because in a game with two dice (the most common) 7 is the most likely throw (chance of getting a 7 is 6/36)

It must go back to biblical times because so many references are to the number 7 in the Bible and in multiples of 7.

If I remeber correctly, early Christians beleived that the were 7 levels to Hell and 7 levels to Heaven - hence the expression 'I'm in 7th Heaven', being the best, happiest place you could be.
Perhaps the accosiation with luck comes from that?

until the discover of uranus by william herschel in 1781 people thought that there were seven planets (the sun, the moon, mars, mercury, jupiter, venus, saturn).
god's universe was perfect (whether god was ra, zeus, or jesus christ) - so 7 must be a magical number.
(this is also why we have seven days to the week).
all of this is obviously obsolete nonsense. but then people who believe in 'luck' are not going to have any trouble behaving all sorts of other guff.
