The power of her love, so strong as to give one's life for, was SO strong, that it could repel even Avada Kedavra. It's old magic, apparently

Maybe that's why an explanation was avoided. Well spotted. . .
Are you one of those people that watched star wars and looks out for all of those mistakes????
Nah, Just Kidding.
Um. . .Maybe, they meant that it was to REPEL, not to DEFEAT the avada kedavra, Lilly didn't exactly SAVE Harry, she died, out of love, that he may have chance to keep living. Voldermort didn't kill Harry because something 'stumped' him that night.
Lilly died because of the avada kedavra, so she didn't save his life in that sense.

Do you get me now???

No, there is no counter curse. Harrys mother didn't do anything, she couldn't. There was nothing either of his parents could do. Everyone around the curse is to die. Thats why Harry is so famous, he was a baby, lived through it and really hurt 'You know who.' Hope you understand a bit better now.

I am also unsure what kind of spell Harry Potter's mom used but from what I understood, what protected Harry from Voldemort is the fact he was protected by his mom's love. His mom's love repelled the spell that Voldemort sent Harry's way, that's why it was Voldemort who suffered in the end.

Pure love saved Harry. To that no curse could harm him...

Personally, I believe it's love, pure love from parent to child, and that's the most powerful spell ever invented.

I believe his mother took the full brunt of the spell instead of Harry. Thus she gave her life for him.
