ignorance. People often fear what is different. They are not open to diversity of life. If we were all the same, life would be boring...

Since a long time back, we have been fighting over religion but as religion became more specific to one race, then the strife turned to a more racial context. Hence, it is something which is practically handed down to our childre except in the case of people with open minds. But it is not only the result of this... ignorance, disconsideration, fear of the unknown, effects of the mass media, even trauma sometimes eg being raped by a black man means all rapers are black.... But you cant totally blame people, environment also is at work in this factors. For exemple, if i was raised in a family where i were to see latinos everyday speaking badly of white men, there wouldnt be a chance that id sacrifice integration in my community at the spite of a moral issue which wouldnt be that strong then, because moral issues are only the result of growing and education through the environment. Even then, racism is a complex issue which still makes victims, even i, and id like to take this opportunity to mention that racism is not only the famed white against the other colours conflict, no. There are black people who are racist, latinos also, chinese also, and the white people eventually. What i mean is racism is present everwhere in every community and it is our duty when confronted with people of the same community as ours who are racist to make them realize the extent of their mistake and try to change them.

People are racist becose it in built in the social mechanism to be racist. Society being the second school of development for the humans and family being the first school. Racist originate from the physical appearences and body structutres. This is an post modernist concept which has originated after the modernity has truimphed in the world. Sense of insecurity leads to the origin of racism. This was existent in India in the form of casteism. In west it is on the basis of colour of the skin. I feel it will continue to exist will not be eliminated totally from the global society. The internsity of racist people will diminish in the coming times due to lots of efforts by the social activists and political people in the world.

Fear of the unknown. I was raised in an all white town, and when I got drafted into the military, back in '71, I met lots of guys from all walks of life. Over the 4 years of military life, I loved them like they were my brother, and they loved me too. Most people don't have the opportunity I had, so I think the first four words of my answer is correct. Ron Couch

Partly it's fear. We are more comfortable around those who look and sound like us. But also it's education. If from 0-16 years we heard our mums and dads saying racist stuff, it just sinks in. I have met people who say racist things out of habit, but don't mean them.
It's similar to homophobia. Some people make jokes about gays just because it was okay in their family and their group of friends to do that. Often they don't mean it at all.
Babies and young kids are not racist until they learn the words from parents etc

This is something that we are taught by a parent or someone growing up. I don't even think they know why they do it , its because they hear those words and it becomes their way of life. It is a loss for them to never know the wonderful friends and different cultures they could be experiencing.

They are ignorant and either can't accept the world as it is--or they can't accept the people who are in it. People can get awfully jelous and have the feeling that their better than anyone else. People like that will never get through life if they act in the way they do.

because as long as there are people, these people will do ignorant and idiotic things that will make other people hate them for their words and actions. life is better segregated than all mixed up. You may not realize it, but throw yourself in with all different kinds of rude, selfish, and impolite people, and you would not want to live there very long and would wish you were with similar people to yourself.

Cuz they thought a specific community is better than the others.
What they don't know, is that we CANT be racist, at least to anyone who are still the same species with us. Because, that makes all of us to be the same. Every each of us have the same potentials.

i think its a fear of someone or something that looks and acts the way differently than we do.
case & point. my 2 year nephew cringes whenever he sees African American child actors in Barney the Dinosaur show. but no one in the family is teaching him to be a racist. btway, we are Asians, if that is of any importance
maybe its just human nature to react to something that is unknown to us.
racism began even before our forefathers were born and we cant blame ourselves for it. its something that is so deep rooted and is therefore very hard to correct.
