ebay has a vague policy against excessive shipping fees here:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-shipping.html
and another vague policy against sellers circumventing ebay's fees here:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-circumventing.html
I think excessive shipping fees and low item cost are a means of circumventing ebay's listing fees. Under Help, choose Contact Us, and then (after logging in, if you haven't already) select View and Report Site Issues. Mention the erroneous shipping rate, but make sure the shipping is really excessive, like $50 or $100 for a small item or something. You might also ask ebay if you can revoke your bid for the item if they do not find it to be a violation.
You can also try contacting the seller first, but I suspect the seller is a con artist if he's selling $0.05 items with ultra high shipping rates (like $40-100+ for ordinary items that require standard shipping).

well first thing, did he win the bid? second is to contact the seller and just explain the situation. say that you can't afford it right now or bid by accident and hope they are understanding. if they don't accept to withdraw then you are obligated to pay for it. feedback you recieve will depend on how it goes between you and the seller. if you don't pay and the seller reports you, then you will be given a neg point by ebay. this just means that ebay will check on your account more often. if this is the only point you get then there it's ok. usually if you incur lots of neg points in a short period of time they'll take action. you can always look up more information about disputing at ebay's help page and forums.

your husband entered into a contract to pay the amount plus the shipping when he bidded on the item. he must pay. if he doesn't then ebay can go prosecute you for the money. at the very least you will get bad feedback. it is up to you to check the shipping charges. if i were you i'd pay and re-sell.

you would possibly want to manage to retract your bid if this is no longer an public sale expiring in 12 hours or a lot less, or in case you've purely bid contained in the previous hour or 2. in case you won't be able to retract the bid then e-mail the service provider and request that they cancel the bid for you.

Ebay works on trust...

You could try contacting the seller but they would be perfectly within their rights to class you as a none payer.

If I had been honest and clear about shipping costs I would expect the buyer to pay for it.

1). Contact the seller, they may be willing to allow you to withdraw.
2). Item was only 5 cents? It probably won't kill your seller not to move it.
3). Will having a "non-paying winner" hit against you traumatize your life?

You cant retract or cancel unless the seller agrees. Report the seller for excessive shipping if thats the case and sit tight.

offer to pay the seller $1 instead of 5 cents and ask the seller to courier it to you through the local rubbish removal service.

If you do get a negative, you can reply to it and apologize for your mistake so people checking your feedback know what happened.
