As an Italo-australian, I probably have a unique perspective.

Both sides' supporters (Italy and Australia) agree that the ref gave 1 very bad call to each side - the red card and the penality were not deserved and everyone would have preferred a more clearcut result :-)

My view is that the Italian did NOT dive - he fell. Italy were lucky to get the penalty but Italy have lost games due to bad luck.

Bad luck is not the same as unfair ............... now justice is another question. (I do not think it was justice for Italy to win - even with 10 players they should have scored several goals against Australia)

well, this varies because if u ask an Italian, they would yes and if you ask an Aussie, they would say no !!!!! In my opinion, I think that the red card for Materazzi was a bit harsh as he did not make full contact with Bresciano (as shown on the replay) so it should have been a yellow ~~~ therefore overall ~ when it was 11 against 11, the Italians were definitely a better attacking team with lots of scoring options and I think the ref may have considered this and awarded them the late penalty which was a bit dubious.

Italy has got the better scoring opportunities. Especially in the first half Italy deserved to score one or two goals, Toni and Gilardino missed shoot they always score. The referee was wrong with Materazzi red card, he deserve a yellow. This decision freeze Italian playing, coach Lippi need to remove a forward (Toni) replacing him with a defender. But Australians failed to increase tempo and attacks. It seems as Australians were looking for (hoping?) extra-time. The last scoring chances were Italian, and, during one of these, the referee's ultimate mistake was the penalty accorded to Italy.
Seeing FIFA match report, you'll be driven to think Australians have played in 10:
8 shoots vs. 11
4 shoots on goal vs. 6
26 fouls vs. 17.
My personal opinion: Australian were looking for extra-time and penalties. They don't deserve to win.

yah it was a fair win and the victory of italy is truly the triumph of italy. because australian player did foul tackling and in its response penalty was given to italy.
what australian think it is an average team.
the move italy was making was very dangerous and if australian did not tackle then italy would make surely a goal
if it were not fair decision then goal would have been gone waste. like in match against japan and croatia and other countries

I really hate Italian football, but yes. While the penalty kick was a slightly bad call, the red card was really, really awful, and without the red card, I dont think Australia would have had much of a chance to begin with.

well, when you're Italian and ur name is Totti, u get rewarded with the penalty in 95th minute. Thats all I have to say.
SaBe: Australia was far better... but, then again, I'm not an Italian;

Lol SaBe I aint Italian myself but there's been soooo much of injustice at this WC, and Italy is the best example!!

both the aussie and italian players are to blame as well as the ref.
Italian player should have passed the ball, the aussie player should not have slide tackled inside his own goal area, ref should ahve paid more attention to the game

OK
there all three are to blame
