Twokay 75 has the right idea. You can try painting two walls a light color and white on the other two. Glazed windows let in light without letting peepers look in. Don't use heavy ornate furniture, but light furniture like wicker or 19th century Victorian chairs or Chippendale style furniture. The windows that don't allow direct sunlight.... can you place mirrors in such a way as to "beam" the sunshine into the interior of the house??? Play around with the mirror idea you just may find you can add light with them. Be sure tho that these windows and the mirrors don't become a magnifying glass tho... or you may start a fire. If it tends to act like a magnifying glass... glase the mirrors so that the reflect the light but in a diffused way that still puts light inside the building. In the bed rooms, if female use beds that have the frames for curtains on them. Use sheer material to drape on and around the bed which will give it a more airy light look. A males room you could use a slightly thicker material that say a male sleeps here. Hope this info proves helpful to you and others. You could try painting a faux scene of a vast plain on a wall and see if that will help as well. Oh, nearly forgot. Use lamps with the new florescent light bulbs in them. Use thinner shades on those lamps to help lighten and brighten the rooms. Good luck.

All the usual with light colours (though keep it as neutral as possible - light does not mean bright, ie: not bright yellow), open up the spaces as much as you can (ie: no unnecessary space dividers such as blinds, etc.) and minimise clutter.
Go a bit further and see how you can modify the spaces to make them feel larger, like joint the living spaces and kitchen as an open plan space. Check with professionals to see if this is structurally possible and get building control approval.

Paint the walls a light color like white or very light tan, get white couch covers, and buy a glass table. you can use yellow flowers and paintings to make the room look lively and refreshing. also go to the home depot and ask about some lighting tips. good luck.

Decorate in light colours, using mirrors to brighten up dark areas and keep the space clear of clutter.

Paint the walls white. I know that might sound clinical but using bright accent colours in fabrics, such as cushions and curtains, along with the white walls really works!

hi i am a interior decorator. your best bet would be to make the walls a creame or light beige color. that would make the place look larger and not look boring with just plain white.
