What I remember from school, two German philosophers, Carl Marx and Friedrich Engels are considered the fathers of communism, though they didn't start their theory from scratch, but based it on previous philosophical ideas, for example, Gegel's. Their main postulate was dialectic materialism with three underlying principles: negation of the negated, unity and fight between opposites and quantity turning into quality. Applied to society, it meant that capitalism was absolutely not the last stage of its development. First, capitalism was the negation of the previous system, namely, feodalism, but it itself had to be negated. The exploitation of the working class by capitalists was the unity of the system, but simultaneously it created the strain. The amount of this strain, the quantity of dissatisfaction of exploited classes was the condition for changing the quality of the system. The next system following capitalism was by prediction, communism. As is clear from the name, communism supposed common resources, common rule etc. It was seen as an intrinsically democratic system, which would cover the whole world, there wouldn't be boundaries, because the world economy would be a single organism. The production would be organised in a perfectly reasonable way, the income would be divided among the population in a reasonable way as well. I am not an economist and I don't know the details of what Marx and Engels envisioned, I just remember the ultimate bliss of the communist system would be complete refusal of money. Anyway, the intermediate system between capitalism and communism, called socialism, was tried in a number of coutries, but as it was quite artificially introduced, it didn't last. It exists now in some Scandinavian countries, like Norway: there is no exploitation of the working class, the social needs of the population are taken care of by the state, there are no big monopolies and not much competition - very much like it was in the Soviet Union, but with better financial planning and no iron curtain. Of course, the beautiful idea of the communism was distorted by those who preached it - as it always happens with beautiful ideas, like, say, Christianity. The failure of communism in 20th century doesn't mean Marx was completely wrong. People were just not ready for it psychologically. I am absolutely sure that capitalism is not the peak of the social development. Hope you got something from my confusing explanations...

God... I'm not going to give you the fu*king Wikipedia definition. I'll give it to you the way I know it...
Communism is a form of Socialism. Socialism is a form of government where everyone does something for one another and where the state controls almost everything. The laws in a Socialist government are very progressive and are made for social fluidity. Communism, however... is a more extreme form of Socialism.
Communism just means that the government owns everything and everyone works in a collective-form of labor... for the sole betterment of the government.
Think of it this way...
In a Socialism: the government can still be fairly democratic...; the government controls everything in the state (or tries to)... but not because they're trying to steal power. they do it just so they can let everybody share everything; almost everybody is equal. Social hierarchies are broken down into more simple tiers... such as "the poor people" and the "slightly richer people"... though all of them are treated equally.
In a Communism: the government owns everything; everybody is equal. There are no social hierarchies at all, unless dealing with government officials; everybody has to work...; you can't own something if you "want" it. You can only receive or own something if you "need" it. This means, that if everybody is living in small high-rises... you can't own a pleasant, swanky Victorian or Contemporary home. But if you need triple-bypass surgery, then there's a very good-chance that you'll get the surgery you need; everyone is usually treated like crap; a dictator sits on top of the world, watching every one of his worker ants work.
Pretty sad if you ask me... but theoretically, Communism is the most benevolent forms of government. Sadly, too many sociopathic bastards expose the weaknesses of the government and distort it. Then they instate it into their own countries and rise to power... where they're able to do their own deed and fill their own evil agendas.
At the same time, theoretically, Communism will never, never, NEVER!! work as a government. You can all sit there and argue with me. It'll never work. Why? Think of it like this...: Everyone is working on the collective farms that the government owns, right? Let's say you're one of the hardest workers on the farm... if not the hardest worker in the entire state of the nation you're in. One of these days... you're going to THINK to yourself, "Oh, man! I don't feel like going to work. I think I'm going to call in sick... I just want a one-day rest from it all..." There you go. Communism has failed. The whole point of the system is for you to work for the benefit of the whole government. Once you stop working... the system begins to fail. Even once you start to THINK about stopping from working... the system begins to develop the potential to fail. Thus, Communism can really never last as a good form of government. Freedom is not allowed for everyone when Communism exists.

Communism, in a nutshell, is the abolishment of private property.
Everything belongs to everybody, and everybody's work belongs to everybody else.
In a purely communist society, everybody works from their abilities to fulfill the needs of others and themselves.
The betterment of the community makes a better place for the individual (which is only logical- when individuals are over-privileged, they become greedy and don't help each other, another great flaw of capitalism).
The goal: a classless, equal and co-operative society - without any political parties fighting for power

first of all, you have to understand the fact that communism is an econmic system. not a type of government. in communism, no one "owns" anything. it is a system which is supposed to make everyone equal. example: in capitalism(america's economic system), a man works for so many hours and gets so much money in return. in communism, a man works for so many hours, and his pay is idvided between everybody. this system works flawlessly in a utopian society, but fails in the real world. the reason being, if a small percentage of the population of a communist nation works, and earns wages, but a larger population does not, there is not enough money to go around. this results in a high percentage of the population living in poverty, with only the government leaders living well. in essence, it eliminates the middle class. there are government officials whom have lots of money, and the commoners whom live in poverty.

It is a concept used to frighten people about enemies and is useful in that sense that may be related with some geographic region. Then nobody is encouraged to analyse things deeply - and can not see how much common they have with some anti-communist regimes, promoted as good.
Previous comment shows that some people believe that a person may exist, which has nothing worth to share. Interesting. Not far from nazi concept.
