Primary sources are produced in the time period by people in the period--letters, pamphlets, paintings, eyewitness accounts, autobiographies, photos, video of an event.
Secondary sources are produced from and about the primary sources--biographies, history books, commentaries.
Written sources are created in writing--letters, autobiographies, books, anything produced as a written text.
Oral sources are dictated by one person to another, or recorded--like if you ask someone to tell you about their high school graduation, and made a tape or video of them talking.
Artifacts are objects -- cups, books, bones, furniture, shells, jewelry, whatever. They provide evidence of how a certain culture behaved.
Provenance in archaeology describes where and how the artifact was found,; it may also include where the object came from or was made. In antique and art buying, provenance means the proof of authenticity and chain of ownership, so that a collector knows the object is what it is claimed to be and that it was obtained legally,

Primary sources are contemporary sources. They are from the time that a particular historical event took place or from a particular historical period. There are various types of primary source evidence some of it is better than others. Let me give you an example. If you were studying Imperial Rome in and around 79AD your primary sources would include the writings of Pliny as he was around at the time (written sources) archeological finds from Pompeii (artifacts), visual sources such as paintings from Pompeii and grafitti etc. I'm harping on about Pompeii as it is one of the most valuable collections of primary source evidence for this period as the city was destroyed by Vesuvius in 79 AD and what has been found, and is still being discovered are untouched since the eruption. Other good sources would include poems by Martial (written sources) and architecture such as the Colosseum. Other primary sources used by historians (although some of these will not be applicable to the above example) include; diaries, wills, census records, public records and laws, newspaper articles, paintings and artwork etc.
Secondary sources can include high quality academic essays on your chosen period.
Provenance is the origin or source from which something comes. If you go to museums and view original primary sources as I do then there are catalogs available to you which show the provenance of your artifact or in my particular case, drawing or painting. It is simply a list of its past owners, where it was discovered and academic description of the item, including how it appears visually. Provenance is very important in history as when examining a new primary source you have to be sure firstly that it is not a fake. Comparative techniques, expert opinion, written and verbal records and the results of tests are often used to help establish provenance.
I hope this is of help to you. Feel free to ask more if you're not sure about anything.
