I'm a bassist and singer and I must admit, quite eclectic in my tastes. My parents are also musicians, so I got a great informal education by way of exposure to many kinds of music, both recorded and live. My main musical loves are:
Blues, Rock, Jazz, and Soul, but with qualification... I like most music.

Each genre of music has so many sub-genres that I don't like all of any certain type, or just any of all types. I love Classical, Dixieland, Punk, New Wave, Reggae, Big Band, Country, Gospel, New Age, R&B...etc...BUT!

My point about this is even some I've listed are just sub-genres of recognized larger genres. Sometimes the best music is that which defies classification, or "crosses over" between two or more disciplines. Have I completely confused you yet?...[Big belly laugh!]... Moody Blues, Chicago, Return to Forever, Spyro Gyra, Electric Light Orchestra, Yes, Allman Brothers, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Tom Petty, Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Jerry Lee Lewis, Joplin, Prince, Hall & Oates, Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Rod Stewart, all owe some of their popularity to successfully doing just that.

I love and have played (in bands) lots of blues. But I've also played Rock, Jazz and Country. I like most traditional stuff by the old (mostly dead) masters, but my tastes lean toward more modern "big city groove" Blues: Stevie Ray, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Poppa Chubby, Tinsley Ellis or Debra Coleman.

My Jazz tastes are similar, yes I like the old greats, who did Big Band, or combo such as Satchmo, Duke, Goodman, Coltrane, Brubeck, Ella, Miller, Oscar, Lena or Miles but also love the younger artists (who are now getting old before my eyes, along with me) like Fusion, or New Age-World Music. I love performers like Herbie, Chick, Metheny, Pastorius, DiMeola, Jean-Luc Ponty or Yellowjackets.

My Rock Love stretches far and wide. From Elvis (Pressley & Costello) to Chuck Berry to Beatles to Jethro Tull, AC-DC, Clapton, Zappa, Lynard Skynard, Little Feat, Hendrix, Yes, Spin Doctors, Mellencamp, Pink Floyd, Soundgarden, Pretenders, No Doubt, Dave Matthews ...Aaargh!

There are even styles where my tastes mystify even me. Take Country for example, I prefer old traditional Country to (sic) "New Country". In other words, I'd rather Hear Loretta, Hank (Sr. or Jr.), Merle, or Willy than Garth Brooks, Gretchen Wilson, Alan Jackson or Shania Twain.

Then there's the directions music has taken, that just passed me by as I grew older. I love what I call "real R&B", a.k.a. Motown or Soul. But most of the whole Rap and Hip-Hop thing just doesn't reach me.
Give me Wilson, Otis, Aretha, Isaac, Gladys. I just don't get Latifah, Snoop, Puffy, Lil' Kim or Usher.

To wrap this up, I think you should keep your ears...and your mind as open as possible, even with my own pre-conceived notions, I just can't pick a favorite. It's like standing in the Library of Congress and asking: "What's the best book in this Library?" For me anyway, that's just not possible, I've read too many great ones to pick a best! I'll sometimes hear a "non-gangsta" Rap, or some Opera or (dare I say) Hip-Hop or "Techno" that I actually enjoy. To close your ears or mind only serves to make your world...Smaller!

Its hard to pick but i have to say Shinedown because lyricaly they are the best band playing today. Brent Smith has a great voice. Barry Kerch is a very good drummer. And you cant forget about Jasin todd and Brad Stewart. They are the best live band ever. They are not the best band ever.(Could be in a few years.) But they are the best live band. And I do like their debut cd Leave A whisper better than Us and Them but Us and Them is a much different album that has great lyrics. If u have heard them on the radio and u like hard rock and metal u should listen to Leave A Whisper. I know they only play the lighter rock songs on the radio like i dare you. and if u still don like them because they have a few lighter rock sounding songs then ur not a true rock fan. they write about life. There is good and bad in life. Thats why i hate some of these bands that just sing about the **** that happens. Some bands r too worried about how people look at them. Brent Smith from shinedown always says they are an honest band.

For me, that's kind of a tough call. You're asking me to choose between Black Sabbath and Slayer.

I guess I like Black Sabbath because they sort of set the standard for future metal kids to asprire to in their own weird way... And when I listen to Black Sabbath, I've found that their music and message (whatever it might be) is timeless, and has, on occasion, transported me to a different time and place.

As far as my adoration for Slayer goes, I don't know that any band of their caliber has ever been able to express so many of my ideas, values and opinions before. That really means something to me. Heck, maybe I'm just too emotionally involved to be more objective.... I'm not sure. =)

Cheers.

Linkin Park

Because the mix rap and rock and a lil of metal all together and they don't sound like any other band out there. and mudvayne best metal band. Because the singer cahd gray sings really fast then slows it down and sings real soft then turns it in to yelling i love that.

Frank Zappa - The real King of 70's Rock, Jazz, Fusion, Blues - extremely prolific - fantastic guitarist - incredible array and variety of music, melodies, tunes, harmonies, lyrics and rhythms and musicians - went to congress to fight for freedom in lyrics, Trend setting the beginning of all rap.

Yes. They had some great songs when I was a teen, and I still listen to them today, especially when I need to revisit my youth. Favorite song; Close to the Edge.
