Negative emotions do certainly! I write poetry and work on writing a novel for my own amusement when I am unhappy. I create things, and produce pictures I could not produce were I in a good mood.

I think the thing is that when you are in a negative mood , e.g. angry or depressed, it is all encompassing, and so it is very evident in your work. This gives it a strong emotional content, and the audience can pick up on your involvement immediately, making it a betterpiece.

Also, when you are unhappy, you tend to dwell more, and in dwelling you are thinking, and in thinking you find new things to wonder at, and new ways of perceieving them. You think of things you wish were so, and things you wish were not. This can be very inspirational.

I'm not saying you can't be happy and creayive - you're just more active when elated, and therefore less suited to a concentrated task such as the ones that give birth to new creations and ideas.

Insanity also has strong links with creativity.

Negativity suggests cynicism. Cynicism suggests anger. Anger is a product of passion. Passion inspires creativity. In essence, anger suggests deeply-felt disappointment with the way of things. Disappointment can lead to despair, but it can also inspire hope. When one's negative feelings are properly understood, great and positive ideas may be put forward in passionate and magnificently meaningful ways.

No, I think negativity stifles creativity. When you start with "I can't do it" or "it won't be very good," you're not going to get very far. My Steve got depressed because anytime I suggested something he did was good, or something he could do, his response was that it was not original. "It's been done before." Honey, my Steve committed suicide! He's never going to do something creative or original now!

It can, just as much as positivity can. Creativity comes from myriad sources, both positive and negative.
