The city of Chicago was named by the Potowatami indian tribes who lived on the land prior to recorded history. It was founded as a trading post in the 1770s. Fort Dearborn was built on the Chicago River, bringing a permanant settlement to the land, until it was destroyed during the war of 1812. Chicago the town was built shortly after the secession of the land by Potowatomi, and was finally incorporated in 1837. Chicago grew exponentially after that, based on its proximity to major water ways (Chicago River, Lake Michigan) and the opening of the famous railways and stockyards. The modern city of Chicago was rebuilt after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 which destroyed a significant portion of the city.
