Search the web for statistisc.

The deforested ground isnt flood-proof and cannot be a good ground for building houses coz sth (roots) has to keep the soil in place (the most important thing to know in bumpy territory).

Look at the rubber industry in Thailand as a good example of short sighted change of land use.
Also places in Africa where desertification is taking place due to increased populations needing fire wood for fuel.
