The first chickens intentionally sent across the road were Rhode Island Reds which were sent along with corn seeds aboard a U.S.-launched V2 rocket in mid July, 1946. The purpose of the experiment was to explore the effects of crossing the road at high altitudes. Some further V2 missions carried hedgehogs, but, the results were all very flat.
A chicken named Albertina became the first chicken to successsfully cross the road on June 14, 1949 (after the failure of her husband, Albert's, mission). But, shortly after reaching the other side of the road, Albertine died when the parachute she was wearing suddenly opened and strangled her. (There is a memorial dedicated to her at NASA)
Numerous other attempts to cross the road were then made by chickens in the 1950s and 60s. These chickens were implanted with sensors to measure vital signs and many were under anesthesia during the attempted crossing.
But, outrage at the treatment of these chickens lead to the closure of the programme in 1974. This is why we still do not have a definitive answer to this question.

GeorgeBush's Answer: We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road or not. The chicken is either with us or it is against us. There is no middle ground here.
Al Gore's Answer: I invented the chicken. I invented the road. Therefore, the chicken crossing the road represented the application of these two different functions of government in a new, reinvented way designed to bring greater services to the American people.
Bill Gates' Answer: I have just released chicken 2003, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook -- and Internet Explorer is an inextricable part of chicken.
Martha Stewart's Answer: No one called to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing order at the farmer's market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any insider information.
Dr. Sues' Answer: Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, But why it crossed, I've not been told!
Ernest Hemingway's Answer: To die. In the rain. Alone.

From: "Lost in space"
"Why did the robot cross the road?"
*pause*
"Because he was carbon-bonded to the chicken!"
I like that version better...just me.
I really couldn't tell you why the chicken crossed the road...there is an infinity of reason's...why does anyone cross the road?
There is obviously something on the other side...maybe he was walking against the traffic instead of with it who knows...in this day and age it isn't safe for chickens to be crossing the road why? Well, becasue when they do we have chicken tenders for dinner...enough said.
