They claim it stands for Beyond Petroleum...it used to be British Petroleum...take a look at the link below

British Petroleum(bp) is a British energy company with headquarters in London.
The newly-renamed "bp" became an initialism no longer overtly standing for "British Petroleum". At the same time BP used the punning tagline "Beyond Petroleum" in some advertising campaigns.
In the 2005 Fortune Global 500 list of companies, BP was ranked 2nd in the world for turnover with sales at $285 Billion

hmmm it stands for beyond petroleum trust me i know i put 98 octane in my car evry 3rd day its bloody expensive and its a pretty good gas station really
