In order for me to go to sleep, I need the television. It's not the noise that helps me go to sleep, otherwise I'd just listen to music. That doesn't work though. And it can't just be any show, it has to be something like a late night talk show. For some reason, with those shows, it feels like they're are people in the room with me, and it helps me to go to sleep. Can anyone help shed some light on why this is happening? It's been this way for most of my life.

Talk shows aren't the only shows that help, they just seem to be better than others.

If there was no tv? I'd stay awake for a while, worrying about this and that and eventually I'd fall asleep.

One more thing, I don't really watch tv that much when I'm awake, if at all.

a couple xanax and a bottle of whiskey would cure that

I would guess that it might be because you're scared of the dark and being alone.

Like if I was really spooked by seeing a really scary movie and I went home, I might put on one of those late night talks shows. Because the environment is really upbeat and it shows people having a good time and laughing.

Maybe you need a happy environment to be comfortable to sleep, and maybe because it's been for your whole life that you have become very used to it. Do you live in a scary neighborhood or something?

Oh yeah, your question is a little incomplete:

What do you do on Saturday and Sunday night when Leno and Letterman aren't on?

Do you tape it? Or does it have to be the real live broadcast?

It's sort of an addiction to tv. Mostly like cigarettes. Try to sleep without tv. You cant sleep? Try again without tv. again and again. Eventually, your eyes will close and you will sleep. It's the beginning that's difficult. Then you ll improve day by day and at some point, you wont need a tv at all to go to sleep. I know that this method is a bit anorthodox, but it works.

Well, it sounds like a similiar problem to the one I have...I can't sleep with the tv on...in fact, I can't sleep with music either...in fact, I can't sleep with any kind of noise at all because otherwise it drives me insane until I feel like the noise is beating me in the head with a hammer...oh and by the way, I can't sleep with the lights on either, so let's keep those lights off please.

i have the exact same problem! I think too much when there is no tv on. The tv helps me clear my brain and fall asleep. unfortunately, I drink a lot of caffiene during the day and that somewhat contributes to my problem.

I dont think you have a problem, I just think you have to have a tv on because it helps you clear your mind instead of staring at a wall and thinking of things,

I just go to and sleep but sometimes if i am in another place other than my own I might leave it on low if the area is very quiet just so I don't hear any bumps in the night lol

i am the same way but music sometimes helps me also. i've never been able to figure it out either. am married so not alone, so i have no clue why i do it either. never had to do it until about three years ago so maybe it has something to do with getting older. lol i don't really know, but if you get a good response that helps you let me know.

It is the government programming waves that instruct you not to turn off the TV at night. You are being programmed every night. Get rid of the TV now.
