I've often wondered about this because there are a few people throughout history who have used a larger percentage of their brain...so, then, how is it that they knew how to open the other percentage of their brain?
I think other aspects have to be looked at when considering this question...such as...how does society and the media impact the amount of our brain that we use? If society or the media is doing the thinking for us, then it would explain why we don't use all of our brain, or when we spend all day watching tv and our brains turn into mush.
We must also consider how drugs affect our brain and how chemicals affect our brain...today, society is full of drugs and chemicals that can slow down or block thought processes and the electrical impulses speeding through our brain cells which transmit messages.
Also, we must looks at all the aspects of the brain...I believe the brain is a very powerful organ...we can force our brain to make our body become healthy, we can sense things that are not tangible through sixth sense, our brains are constantly taking in data which in turn transmits this data to different areas of the body and everything we are physically is controlled by our brains...think about that for a moment.

We use much, much less than that. Maybe you mean that we use a part of the brain to think that is about 1/10th of the total brain size. Or, maybe you mean what some people used to say--that we use only 1/10th of our brain power in what we all think and do in a lifetime, so there are powers that we don't develop or use (the other 90 percent), which may or may not have any validity.

Yes, approximately one tenth. Apparently Einstein was able to use only 15% of his brain and he was a genious!
