Technically an offensive player is offsides if they are closer to the goal than the last field defender (this does not include the goal keeper for obvious reasons) when the ball is played forward by the offense.

I answered with Football in mind, not American Football. Hope this clears things up for you.

the answered Q ! OFF side as a word means off the side :D
but in football : if the player ( who attacks ! let us call the team , A ) is nearer to the goal than the player of the other team ( deffender and this this will be B ) and a player of team A passes to the attacker in this situation It will be offside but if in the way a deffender make a change in the way of the ball ( and the first direction was not to the attacker in the offside ) It will be a big mistake and a good chanse for team A , because it is not offside !

When the player from the opposite team is in front of the defenders while he is being passed the ball from someone else on his team. This gives him and his team an unfair advantage in he can score and the defenders cannot catch up.

when the players cross the line odf scrimmage (when the ball is layed at) for example if the ball is at 42yards, players from either sides cant cross the 42 line unless the ball is snapped

If I remember correctly it means a receiver / or running back crossed the line before the ball was hiked to the quarterback.
