Any time you have shared video ram with the normal RAM, the problem is the RAM bus itself.
On a high speed graphics card, the graphics processor talks directly to it's own ram....very fast.
If the GPU has to go through the bridge to the system RAM, not only is there that lag, but the system ram runs slower than ram connected to the GPU itself.
This is not true of all integrated graphics. Many integrated controllers have their own video RAM which is wicked fast.
It's all based on the laptop, but as for shared vs proprietary, shared loses hands down.

The problem is you're not offloading the video rendering to a second graphics processing unit. This means that you are using clock cycles of the processor and you are sharing the memory.

It means that you're system uses more of the CPU and more Memory than a computer with an extra graphics chip. If your computer can't keep up then your video will start skipping and it will look bad. Graphics intensive games will probably not work with integrated graphics.
