It's not a question against truckers or why they idle...there always seems to be an inordinate amount of trucks idling at night right on the shoulder of I-95 before the NY border. I was just wondering why there and not the rest areas. there are lots of huge signs posted specifically there saying emergency stopping only...with trucks idling right beneath them. Are the waiting for something?

we do it 'cause we can only drive 10 hours straght then park 8 hours. idle engine for air conditioning and air makes the breaks work. rest areas are usually packed and at the end of 10 hours all there is is the side of the road.

They need to keep the engine warm.
If they shut it down they need to warm it up again before they can drive.
