The important role the French played in American history? You mean the important role the French played in the American Revolutionary War? Yes, I think many people know that, especially if you live on the east coast where many towns are named after French commanders. Other than that and the Statue of Liberty, I think the real question is do the French understand the important role the United States played in French history? The American Revolution was a training ground for the French Revolution (not to mention a chance for them to wage yet another war on their eternal enemy of Britain). Since then, the United States has done their dirty work for everything from finishing the Panama canal to winning two world wars.

They helped the Americans during The Revolutionary War, but they helped because of their dislike of the British. Of course it back-lashed, the French Revolution bring the end of French Monarchy. The last 150 years of French history is riddled with failure, WW2,the Panama Canal, etc. etc.

No, 98% have no idea because this a what have you done for me lately world. We'd STILL be freakin colonies without the French.
And NO we didn't save them from the German's twice. WWI was well in hand when the US entered. Had we not entered, by spring 1919 it would have been long since over. As for WWII, do you REALLY think we went into France to save the French??? Very stupid assumption. We did that to take pressure off the Soviets.

Yes I do, the french also influenced on how many of states were named. Illinois is a french spelling of our state. which most people here in the us pronounce wrong the S is silent.
I remember studying it in high school and they were very detailed about it and my favorite teacher always said we could have been speaking french instead of English. But cookie is right some people just don't care.
