1. Look for body language that might indicate someone is lying, such as not looking you in the eye when speaking to you, being fidgety, or acting nervous or uncomfortable.
2. Listen for inconsistencies in what the person tells you, such as different stories on different days, different time frames, mistakes in remembering details or mixing up details.
3. Notice if the person steadfastly resists answering any questions. Extreme defensiveness could mean that he or she is trying to hide something.
4. Notice if the person accuses you of lying or being deceitful when you really haven't been. This could reflect the other person's own underlying behavior, which he or she is projecting onto you rather than owning up to it.
5. Listen to your gut and intuition. You may just know someone is lying. If you are not sure, don't jump to conclusions. Try to get some evidence to back up your hunch.
6. Consider asking directly if the person has lied to you. Many people feel bad getting caught up in lies, and find it a relief to finally be honest.
7. Try to be understanding and listen to the person's reasons for lying. Was he trying not to hurt you? Was she afraid you would be angry, upset or disappointed?
8. Look at your possible role in having someone lie to you. Are you someone who gets so upset hearing the truth that others feel they can't be honest with you?

You can't.
Body language? Psychology? Do you think those are only available to you? Anyone can learn about it and anyone can train themselves to exhibit the proper responses and signals.
I, for one, do not blink and give direct eye contact when I lie. I keep focused so my pupils would not dilate and my blinking follows a regular rhythm. When I want to establish control over the situation, I steeple my fingers. If a person is aware of the tell-tale signs, he can avoid them or use them actively to convince you of a certain position.

Ahhhhhhhh....they will tell you this really elaborate story, complete with all sorts of details that aren't really necessary -- it's because they were spending too much time "thinking of a good story" in case you confronted them. Also, as others have mentioned, they cannot look you directly in the eye -- they avert their gaze, generally down - to the left, it seems. Or maybe I'm fibbing?!!! ;) good luck.......oh, wait, there is one more way ---- if they suffer from pinocchio syndrome, their nose will become quite substantial in direct correlation to the tallness of the tale told! (say that 5 times fast!) good luck!

If they're story is vague or incomplete.
If they dodge your questions or are unwilling to answer them.
If they become defensive for no reason.
If they stutter, stammer, or say "um" a lot (more than usual).
If they take a long time to answer.
If their heart beats faster.
If their palms start sweating or their body temperature rises.
If their eyes become larger.
If they become fidgety.
If they don't look you in the eyes.

it's all about body language and personnal experience. It's like trying to find out if a smoker is addicted to smoking.

They usually won't look you straight in the eye, they would look down.
Also, stuttering sometimes.
