After you film a movie, and it goes into post production and has all the dubbing, special effects and whatever needs to go into it, what are the next steps? When does promoting the movie start? Do you think that a movie filmed in New York would premiere in NY, or would it premiere in LA? What if it's being submitted to a film festival (Cannes, Sundance, etc)? What does someone wear to such premieres? How about children (10 years and younger)?

Depending the budget and whether the studio is really behind it, they can start promoting as soon as they have enough footage to assemble a trailer. A trailer is the short bits of movies you see during "Coming Attractions".

Every movie is assigned a budget, and whatever they have alotted for "Promotion" is what gets used. This is for movie, TV and radio ads (called "spots"), merchandise (T shirts, hats etc), giveaways, billboards, etc. The smaller the promotion budget, the less can be done to promote the movie. Then there are audience tests. They preview the entire movie to see how an audience will react to it. If they dont like it on the whole, the movie is reworked, additional scenes shot, etc. This of course also impacts promotion, as they need to know WHAT movie theyre trying to sell.

If the movie was about New York and filmed mostly in New York, then they might pop for an additonal East Coast premiere, but LA is where all the movie critics are, so the movie will of course have to premiere in LA. However, if its a big enough movie, they may fly you both oput on their nickel.

As far as proper attire, if youre escorting your niece, who was in the picture, there should be someone contacting you as to appropriate attire. You may be contacted by clothes manufacturers, wanting you to wear their creations free. Make SURE they say FREE. Remember, nothing too flashy, your NIECE was in the movie, not you: No need to try to upstage her. As for your niece, nothing too Christina-Aguilera-y... after all, Im assuming shes under 10. And no AFTER PARTIES! ;)

Oh and have fun, but remember: Youre gonna be the only one at that premiere who doesnt have an ulterior motive against your niece. Look after her.
