why is this? Unless I heard wrong. But there are instructions for earthquakes-stand in a doorway. Tornado-go to a basement or low area. Blizzards and hurricanes are relatively predictable. Lightning-if your hair starts to react-roll as tightly into a ball and remain low to the ground. If flash floods kill more people then why arent there any known precautions or emergency procedures for people to follow? I'm going to be looking for a place on a lake or river. I've been curious about this longer than plans to find waterfront. It just doesnt make sense to me.

They happen so quickly, there's not a lot you can do in the moment.

But! You can pick a place to live that's out of the danger zone appropriately. You can live on a lake or river, as long as your house is out of the way of known flood zones (for instance, on a man-made lake, make sure your're house is higher in altitude than teh top of the spillway. That'll make it as safe as you can.

The initial flood doesn't kill very many people, it's the sickness and starvation that usually follows. After a flood, ie Hurricane Katrina, the standing water becomes very polluted and this spreads disease. This diseases often is highly contagious and easily spread, causing a high death rate. Lack of food and fresh water also kills many people. This is ultimately why flood kills more than earthquakes and volcanoes, etc.

I wouldn't let this deter me from puchasing a house on a lake. High death rates would only apply to a large population, not individuals living near a lake.

Flash floods are un-predictable. Moving water has a lot of power behind it. And they happen very fast! So yes they do cause more loss than the other things you mentioned.

Right go to high grounds. Floods take awhile to occur so get out ASAP and run for the hills.

Flash floods happen so quickly, that there just isn't enough time for the warning.

people can hide from a blizzard or a tornado, it's not a difficult thing to do, but not everyone can swim, so they drown when it floods.

Flashfloods come so fast, it can sweep your feet and drown you immediately. You may well be dead before you're able to "stand on the doorway".
