Right now I have about $150 of purchased music from itunes. It all fits on my ipod (4 giga byte) If I lost the music on my computer, but plugged in my ipod, would my music go back onto my computer from the ipod?

putting them on CDs will take far too much time especially if you have a lot of songs... what you have to do is get an external back-up device which you can save all of your data on (music, pictures, texts, any documents). They usually have a very high capacity (60 GB or so) and you can find them at any consumer electronic's store such as RadioShack or Virgin Megastores..
One time i opened my Itunes library and discovered that ALL OF MY SONGS (about 8 GB of songs) had been deleted.. luckily i had them all saved on the external device..

There are two ways i do know of this, One is to Burn the Music to Cds from Itunes.

i recommend that you go and download this software for free. It will allow you to transfer your music from your ipod back to your computer, and also lets you take your itunes purchased music on your ipod and turn it into .mp3 file format instead of the .m4p I tunes format. you can find it at http://www.sturm.net.nz/website.php?Section=iPod+Programs&Page=SharePod

So you don't have to buy anything external Devices, because isn't that what your ipod is for. And if you delete your music and plug in your Ipod, your music WILL NOT go back to the computer. So you music purchases will be gone forever..

approx how many gb of music do u have in ur itunes?
do u have a dvd writer ?

if the music u have is around ~10 gb and u have a dvd writer then u can write them into 2 dvd's
OR if u dont have a dvd writer u will have to put them into cd's which is a hectic work.
so i suggest tat if u dont have a dvd writer..... then get one!
OR if u have a HIGH capicity ipod or any mp3(20-60 gb) player store your music in that.

Invest in an external hard drive.

100GB is usually a standard size. The great thing about external hard drives is that you can dump your photos, music, important doc's, etc. on it and if your computer crashes, you still have your important stuff!
No messing around with CD's or thumbdrives, etc.

I would highly recommend buying one very soon.
You never know when your computer will throw a tantrum!

You could get something like a cruzer and back it up or burn all of the songs onto discs and file them away.

That's what I'm going to do--or so I keep saying I will!

I agree with the above and that's probably the most effective way. If not the only way.
