Best is a soft toy. Good to play with and safe.

Picture and simple story books are ALWAYS a great gift for a toddler. Lyle, Lyle Crocodile, Sesame Street, Clifford the Big Red Dog, books of colors or shapes, and (my personal favorite) "No Moon, No Milk" are all excellent gifts because they are the gift that keep on giving. No child I've ever met ever tossed out a book unread....something that can't be said of clothes and toys.

Start an IRA or a college fund and give it to her parents.

From my experience with my two children, and all my nieces and nephews, most babies have TONS of toys (too many, in most cases!) and when the baby sees the presents, she'll be more intersted in playing with the box and wrapping paper that surrounded it. When one of my nephews turned 1, his grandfather wrapped up a dishwasher box, and that was Trevor's favorite present...he spent a good solid hour crawling through it, hiding in it, crumpling the wrapping paper. (His grandfather opened a savings account for him as his "real" present.)

Clothes are always useful, too.

You can get a small ball at sporting goods stores that come in packs of two that one year old babies LOVE to play with...they look like the old fashioned playground balls but are small enough for a one year old to hold with both hands. It's simple and a lot of fun!

Open a bank account for her. Everytime she has a birthday, Christmas or Easter, deposit money into her account. She'll be rich when she's 20

More than likely she will be more interested in the wrapping paper than anything you actually give her! Babies just have no gratitude!!

Seriously don't bother buying anything elaborate - she won't remember it and will likely destroy it.

I do like one previous suggestion of the bank account though.

a savings bond, and add to it every year . kids get way to many toys when their young. Imagine kids who don't have any plus I know with my family my kids always have more than enough so savings would be your best bet
