Why are boys so mean to girls they like?

I teach 4th grade and I see these boys just be so nasty but it's quite apparent they like giving girls their attention, you tell me out there grown boys?

Because they're too shy or embarrassed to express their true feelings, so they have to find some avenue to get the attention of the girl they like.
