-if they are going somewhere cold from somewhere warm, get them some hand warmers, shoe insert warmers, gloves, hats, scarves, etc.
-if they are going somewhere warm from somewhere cold, get them sunscreen, neck coolers, a fan, etc.
-get them some school spirit stuff. a t-shirt, hat, noise-maker, or other thing for a football game. etc.

A matress ... if you can afford it because collage mattresses are dispicable! & if she's going to a collage like Appalachain State University then maybe a strong fan since in some dorms there is no air conditioning. Money is always a great gift ... especially to collage students because everything is new & ussually they're not that great at managing their money; so justsend a little bit of money to her every now & then. Alsom a fridge would be an extremely genorous & thoughtful gift as well.

My favorite item when I lived in the dorms was a small electric kettle and a box of instant beverages and soups. The kettle was small enough not to be considered an "appliance" (not allowed in my dorms) and could boil about 16 ounces of water in a few minutes. Coffee, plain and flavored, hot chocolate mix, ramen, etc. got me through more than a few all-nighters.

when i went away to college, i got this cute bucket with my name painted on it to take to the bathroom and hold my necessities. i loved it and used it all through college. Maybe you could get something like that and put some of her fave products in it.
