If it's really storming close by your dwelling, not only turn off the pc, but unplug it from its electrical source. This is best, even if your pc is plugged into a surge protector or a UPS. If a bolt of lightning strikes close to your dwelling, the surge can jump right past surge protectors, UPS's, and even the power on-off switches, and fry your equipment. Better safe than sorry.

Many computers, modems have been wiped out by not being turned off and unplug from electrical and phone source.

I agree with Jolly and Celtic-Tides,
have it plugged into a Uninterruptable Power Supply,
(I recommend APC units) because they guarantee
to pay you back if you get zapped with their unit attached.

Plus by all means, please DO unplug the phone cord.
Celtic-Tides nailed it by saying to do this. As the modem/phone cable is usually the culprit for most zaps!
APC makes units to put in line with the modem as well.
I recommend you do that.

if in storming, electriccity go up/down /power failures occurs at you location, then its good to shut it down. else it ok to work with it.
