Check the temperature of the PC (inside). If it is super hot, then you may have hardware problem. This is quite unlikely if you have a branded PC.

If you are using a 72K rpm drive, defragment the disk will not help. The hard disk is fast enough.

You need to:
1. Repair your Registry (use Registry Machanic, Spyware Doctor etc)
2. Scan your PC for any spyware, adware (use Spyware Doctor, Zone Alarm etc)

Best thing to do is:
1. Backup you data files
2. Reinstall Windows.

When my computer is going slow I do these things:
First I close any windows I don't need,
I click on "Tools", go to Internet Options and open it and then clear the cookies and the saved pages;
Then I run a scan (I use Lavasoft Ad-aware) to make sure I don't have anything on my computer that has been placed there without my consent;
then I turn the computer off, remove the power cord, let it rest for a couple of minutes, and then re-plug it in and start it up again.

Those things usually do the trick.
Good luck!

first thing go to your add/remove programs on your hard drive and remove all the programs that are running that are unnnessesary. Then do a disk clean up and delete everything, dont worry, its not stuff youll need.. They if that doesnt help run a defrag, thats in system tools. Then run you antivirus and your spybot. If none of this works start it over from scratch.

I have 1GB left and my computer is running fine, hard drive space doesn't matter so don't start deleting things, run a virus-scan check what uneccesary processes you're running. Crtl-Alt-Delete>processes if you don't know which are which I suggest not deleting things... Restart your computer, leave it idle for 5 minutes and return, check for things running in the background, some anti-virus scans run unknowingly in the computer. Close somethings in the little thing in the right on the taskbar, rightclick and close, or stop.

download ad-aware se and spybot 1.4 from downloads.com to remove spyware and spybots. then run anti-virus on your machine. Last I would do a disk defrag. After that if your machine isn't that old you can add memory. If its old just upgrade your machine.

Oh and if by slow you only mean the internet, try turning off your computer, then your dsl/cable modem/router. Leave it all off for two minutes. Turn on the cable/dsl modem, wait one minute than turn your computer on. If you don't have dsl or cable internet then disregard.

Did you try a disc cleanup? Perhaps you have spyware? Run sbybot or Adaware....both free downloads. Do a virus scan too. Defragment the drive if you have had the computer longer than a couple years and you run heavy apps on it.

thats not even a factor. you have to decrapify your computer. its probably loaded with spyware and tons of junk that is slowing it down. maybe the fact that you have 16 items running in the tray are slowing it down. you might also have some useless processes running in the background. im sure you have a computer savvy friend who can help you fix these problems. if you dont i feel bad fo you and even worse for your computer. anywho if you notice that your hardrive is spinning while you arent really doing anything heavy with your computer it could mean that a hacker is accessing your stuff. get a firewall.

You may need new RAM... make sure you have at least 512megabites of it. Also, you could have ltos of spyware. Download "Search and Destroy" and "Adaware"(they are free, just google it) and do scans routinely. Also, if you use Internet Explorer and have lot of pop ups.. DON'T... get Mozilla Firefox! It's much faster and it has it's own pop up blocker... I don't think I've ever seen a pop-up while using it (over a year)

How large is your RAM ? Larger is better especially when your PC keeps a lots of datas..
Yes, I do agree with x_apim... Do defragmented your files and check the spyware, updating your antivirus...
Do delete anything that is unnecessary and don't forget to clean up your recycle bin...

the last resort is send your PC to PC station.. Those experts will help you and you just need to pay the bills..
