all the answers so far talk about how they discovered their nakedness - but how does that happen? why?
they had discovered sexuality in the Garden - which is why they were now covering up. They understood a new desire - lust - not innocent nudity anymore. Eve was pregnant - and the proof is in not a dialogue with God about their leaves - but pronouncements to Eve that "you will give birth in pain", and to Eve and "the serpent" satan "I will put enmity between thy seed and the woman's seed. You will bruise his heel (Jesus), but I will crush your head (destruction of satan and his followers)."
this is also why over and over again YHVH warns against mixing Adam's seed (DNA) with satan's children - which among others are the Cainanites (sons of Cain - notice Cain's children are not in the lineage line of Adam and Eve's children - but his own - not the same seed), etc.
Like the serpent told Eve - taste the fruit and you'll be a creator just like God. How is it possible for people to be creators? Sex. Self pro-creation. By creating people.

Good question, Chandigarhman; when he ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, Adam's eyes were opened to his nakedness, so he went to find something with which to clothe himself. Originally, when he was created, though, he was not embarrassed:
Adam and Eve were naked but not embarrassed by their nakedness (Genesis 2:25). Since they were the only two humans on the planet, privacy was not an issue.

He BECAME ashamed of his nakedness, after he wass tricked into partaking of the forbidden fruit. Always remember that The Devil knows The Bible more than YOU, and he will use the SMALLEST LIE just LIKE he did in the garden, to RUIN your life, if he CAN!

Once they ate the apple from the forbidden tree, their eyes were opened to all that is good or evil. They then realized that they were naked, and should be clothed.

Who says they were tied around his waist? I have not read this in the bible.

The knowledge of good and evil. (which the forbidden fruit gave him ... which Eve gave him ... which the serpent lied about.)
